Construction News Image
Mace has been selected as the project manager for Stratford's £1.1 billion East Bank development.

The project brings together several education and cultural organisations, such as the University of the Arts London's London College of Fashion, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) with the Smithsonian Institution, Sadler's Wells Theatre and the BBC, to create a new 'powerhouse' of culture, education, innovation and growth.

Speaking during an event at the London Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled the latest proposals for the project and confirmed that the BBC had joined as the latest partner.

He said: "Great cities are defined by their ambition as much as their achievements - East Bank is the most ambitious new project of its kind for decades.

"I have made culture, innovation and growth a top priority, and as London's centre of gravity extends east, I'm delighted that we're placing culture and education at the heart of this development and the Olympic legacy."

As project manager, Mace will lead project and construction management on the V&A East museum, Sadler's Wells East theatre, London College of Fashion's campus and the BBC Concert Hall. Contractor procurement has commenced and the development will open from 2022.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has allocated £151m towards the development, helping to create 1,500 jobs, £1.5 billion of economic benefit and 600 new homes.

Lyn Garner, Chief Executive, London Legacy Development Corporation, said: "Mace has a long and successful record of working on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, they have provided us with an excellent team and we are confident they will deliver to a high standard."

Jason Millett, Mace's Chief Operating Officer for Consultancy, said: "It's a privilege to have been selected to deliver this major new cultural district and continue our successful relationship with the London Legacy Development Corporation at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

"We are very much looking forward to working with the Mayor, LLDC and the cultural partners to deliver world-class facilities at East Bank for all Londoners and visitors to enjoy."
