Port Of Killingholme Boosted With New Lay-Bys Ahead Of Brexit
The Port of Killingholme near Hull has been upgraded with new lay-bys for lorries in response to the potential impact of Brexit.
The new lay-bys will enable the port to handle increased numbers of deliveries and to better cope with any possible delays from customs procedures and processes after Britain leaves the EU.
Minster Surfacing completed the 4000m² project, delivering space for the port to hold around 100 additional lorries at any one time.
Bruce Spencer-Knott, MD of Minster Surfacing said: "I'm really proud that we've been able to help this crucial port prepare for any possible disruption that could come from Brexit. Thanks to the team and the work of our partners on this project, we've helped this port to be ready and able to deal with whatever might come as we approach our departure from the EU. I'm really impressed with how everyone has come together on this project and I'm glad to have played a part in it.
"Better yet, a quantity of the tarmac we used was made from recycled material. This avoided material from being sent to landfill and it reduced the need for oil and aggregate to be quarried or drilled, helping the environment."
The Port of Killingholme was built in 2000 although the location has been the site of a pier and jetty for shipping since the 1910s. Initially, a two berth port known as the Humber Sea Terminal, the port has been expanded to have six berths including roll-on-roll-off facilities with a pre-delivery inspection centre and a rail connection.
