VolkerFitzpatrick Redevelopment Claims Top Engineering Prize

Construction News Image
The major redevelopment project at Hackney Wick station in London has secured a major prize at the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards 2019.

The station beat nine other shortlisted projects to claim the Community Benefit award.

The Community Benefit category recognises projects that have either made a significant contribution to society, a public space project that makes a positive impact upon the local community, a restoration of historic infrastructure or a project that improves the environment.

Hackney Wick station was awarded the accolade for its design, which reflects the industrial heritage and waterways of the area. The judges were impressed by the look and feel of the station and how it encapsulates the artistry and creativity, for which the area is well known.

Peter Hendy, chair of Network Rail and the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: "It's a testament to everyone who worked on the project that Hackney Wick station has been recognised by the ICE in winning this prestigious award for community benefit.

"It's been over a year since the station opened, and more passengers make use of the vastly improved station with improved accessibility via an underpass to help connect the communities that live either side of the railway."

Matt Wilson, senior project manager at VolkerFitzpatrick, which delivered the project, added: "This project was a collaborative effort by all involved. Being recognised by the ICE is an amazing achievement and reinforces the great effort made by everyone to ensure this station's redevelopment success, whilst also providing better access for those living within the community."
