Plans For New Lambeth Community Approved
A major regeneration scheme in the Lambeth borough of London is set to move forward following approval.
Lambeth Council's Planning Applications Committee voted in favour of the 8 Albert Embankment scheme, which will see a new mixed-use community delivered that offers significant benefits to the local community.
The proposals from developer U+I and the London Fire Brigade will see the site transformed to include a new fire station for Lambeth, with modern facilities for firefighters, and a new permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum. It will also see the Grade II listed former London Fire Brigade HQ restored to house a new fire station, museum, rooftop restaurant and hotel.
Designed by architect Pilbrow & Partners, the plans include the development of 43 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable, as well as the creation of 1,264 jobs across 100,000 sq ft of new workspace and new public spaces.
Karen McCormick from U+I, said: "This is a big step towards the transformation of 8 Albert Embankment, where new homes, workspaces and public spaces will regenerate a public site that has mostly lain vacant for ten years. The development will have a contemporary fire station at its heart as well as a permanent London Fire Brigade Museum. The museum will be an important educational centre and will provide a world class collection which tells the story of firefighting, from the Great Fire of London to the present day. The plans follow extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders and demonstrate U+I's commitment to delivering great places in order to create positive social and economic change."
Deputy Commissioner Andy Roe at the London Fire Brigade, added: "We are pleased that Lambeth Council's planning application committee has given the go-ahead for these plans. These proposals will ensure we can continue to keep Lambeth residents safe long into the future with a refurbishment of Lambeth Fire Station, one of the busiest in London. Also included is a long-awaited permanent home for our museum to deliver its fire safety education work and wealth of exciting, educational family activities. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the fire station and museum in the near future."
