New Peterborough Primary School Tops Out
The development of a new primary school in Hampton, Peterborough, has reached a major construction milestone.
A topping out ceremony was hosted on the site of the new Hampton Lakes Primary School last week to celebrate the project reaching the highest point of construction.
Contractor Interserve was joined by representatives from partners Hampton Academies Trust, Peterborough City Council and the Department for Education, as well as a Cabinet Member, Ward Councillors, school governors and other key stakeholders, to mark the occasion.
Councillor Lynne Ayres, Peterborough City Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "As the fourth fastest growing city in the country, the need to create extra school spaces is an urgent one and we are actively working to address this. We are committed to providing sufficient classroom spaces to ensure that the educational needs of children and young people in the city continues to be met."
The £6.4m construction project will see a facility created for 420 children living in Hampton East and the wider Hampton area of the city and provide accommodation for 26 nursery places.
The new building, which is a major educational priority for Peterborough City Council, will open in September 2020 when the children and staff relocate from their temporary home at Hampton College Primary Phase.
Helen Price, executive head teacher of Hampton Academies Trust, which is to run the new free school, added: "The topping out ceremony marks the significant progress Interserve Construction has made in building our new building and means we remain on target to welcome the children to the new building in September. Hampton Academies Trust is an inclusive community-focused trust committed to delivering schools paces to our community."
