Kier has completed building work on a new physical training centre for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
Situated at the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in Dartmouth, the new building provides 21st century physical training to modern Navy standards, with its 600 personnel now able to benefit from the first-class facilities. Within the building, there is a multi-purpose main hall as well as three activity spaces which include a weights room. It also includes changing rooms, laundry and drying rooms and offices for staff.
Kier delivered the new building which supports the MOD's efforts to minimise emissions and reduce its carbon footprint with a number of environmentally friendly features, including solar thermal and photovoltaic panels to reduce the reliance on electricity and wind catchers to naturally ventilate the sports hall.
Doug Lloyd, operations director at Kier Regional Building in Western & Wales, stated: "The completion of the new physical training centre at Britannia Royal Naval College builds on our successful delivery of infrastructure for the DIO on projects across the UK. We are delighted to have completed and handed over this first-class facility.
"Our highly skilled teams have worked compassionately within the Royal Navy’s grounds and the building has a number of features to help offset the MOD’s carbon emissions. Throughout the duration of this project, we have also worked with our local supply chain and provided job and training opportunities as we look to leave lasting legacies in areas in which we build."
Simon Jones, DIO project manager, said: "We were pleased to work with Kier on this prestigious and successful project. Our collaboration has produced a modern and fit for purpose facility where the Navy will be able to train for many years to come."
