Plans Approved For Net Zero Carbon Housing

Construction News Image
Planning permission has been approved for the City of York Council's second development of net zero carbon housing in Burnholme.

The development is part of the council's Housing Delivery Programme to create 600 homes over five years.

The new homes will sit alongside and benefit from the council’s innovative redevelopment of the former Burnholme School which includes a new community centre and library, the refurbished Burnholme Leisure Centre and sports fields, and Mossdale Residence care home.

The 83 homes will be a mixed community of 1-bed flats, 2-bed bungalows, 2-, 3- and 4-bed houses.

There will be up to 11 parking spaces for disabled people, while to encourage more active travel, ample private and communal bike storage spaces will be provided.

The site's communal spaces include a central green, an orchard and a natural/woodland play area. Large communal benches and tables in the orchard will encourage residents to get to know each other and build a sense of community. Children can learn about growing and harvesting fruit and can play among the trees.

Cllr Denise Craghill, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Neighbourhoods, said: "Thank you to all residents who worked with us, our architects and partners, to co-design these exceptional, community-focussed homes and spaces.

"Securing planning permission brings these wonderful homes another step closer to help improve residents’ lives by meeting net zero carbon standards, supporting the city’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030 and helping us tackle fuel poverty."
