Covered walkways are a versatile solution used in a wide variety of applications across the United Kingdom.
On largescale sites, they can offer a protective path that ensures pedestrians remain unhampered by the elements. Whether they have to walk a long distance between site buildings or travel from the car park to an office, people can enjoy a dry journey free from wind, rain, or snow.
Educational institutions have a responsibility to the health and safety of pupils and faculty members, making covered walkways a common way to connect buildings at schools and college campuses. Supermarkets and other retail centres also employ these innovative options to ensure shoppers are protected while they queue outside.
Available in an extensive range of designs and using different materials, it can seem like a tricky task to decide which covered walkways is best for a site. To help narrow down your selection, we’ve collected five of the leading designs currently available. Read on to find out which one is a fit for your requirements.
• HD barrel roof covered walkway
The HD Barrel Roof covered walkway is a flexible solution, capable of providing all-weather protection when people are walking between spaces or buildings making it a popular option for multiple applications.
Exceptionally low maintenance to keep in excellent condition this type is constructed from rust-free aluminium and resistant to corrosion. Manufactured to the British Standard BS EN 755, it is built to endure. As a result of these attributes, it makes a solid choice for those seeking a sound return on their investment.
This kind of covered walkway can be adapted to suit different environments. Different glazing can be added giving customers the choice of panels made of tough safety glass, ultraviolet stable polycarbonate or even sheets of perforated steel. This last option is ideal when covered walkways may encounter anti-social behaviour as they are entirely vandal resistant.
The aluminium framework can be powder coated in any RAL or BS colour. This allows enterprises, organisations, and institutions to brand their walkway or make sure it matches the current colour scheme of a site. As a result, this type of covered walkway is favoured by residential care homes, hospitals, and schools.
• Mono pitched covered walkway
Also crafted from high-grade aluminium, the Mono Pitched Covered Walkway offers a hardwearing option that is also protected against rust and other forms of corrosion. While not as versatile as an HD barrel roof model, this type of covered walkway is cleverly engineered to keep users dry. It features an innovative gutter section fabricated from PVC that ensures that any rainwater is always discharged at the lowest part of the side glazing and covered roof.
Like other leading covered walkways its aluminium structure comes powder-coated in the specific BS or RAL colour selected by the purchaser. While it is not available with anti-vandal panels it can still be shipped with UV stable polycarbonate or toughened safety glass, offering a robust option with excellent visibility.
This style of covered walkway is offered in custom sizes and lengths to suit requirements and its upright stanchions can be base plate or sub-surface fixed to suit different terrain. Aluminium options like Mono Pitched Covered Walkway are popular options for sites where budget is a consideration. Exceptionally lightweight, aluminium can make for more affordable installations.
• Airone dome walkway
Unlike the previous two options, the Airone Dome Walkway is manufactured from steel section rather than aluminium. As an iron alloy steel can be susceptible to rust, but the steel used in this covered walkway is galvanised to protect it. This specialist process involves the steel being dipped into hot vats of zinc giving it premium protection from corrosion such as iron oxide.
The roof of this hardwearing option can be manufactured from PVDF or PVC to suit different needs and features integral guttering to manage rainwater efficiently. Three metres wide, this spacious walkway can be supplied in unlimited lengths and can easily achieve angles and corners to match site topography.
Powder-coated to provide a smart-looking and low-maintenance solution, the Airone Dome Walkway can be modified with optional extras for added comfort and enhanced protection. These include PVC sidewalls and heating and lighting systems, making it ideal for use at all times and in any weather.
• Social distancing covered walkways
An increasingly popular option since March 2020, the Social Distancing Covered Walkway offers a sheltered corridor for people waiting to use services when COVID-19 restrictions are in place. While offering protection from the elements, enterprises installing this kind of walkway can ensure customers are correctly social distancing.
With an understanding that restrictions may be enforced and lifted periodically, this type of walkway is adaptable for different uses for added value. Boasting a modular design, it can be easily dismantled and deployed where necessary and can be modified for use as trolley shelters at supermarkets and other retail facilities.
• Wall-mounted covered walkways
Finally, wall-mounted covered walkways can be affixed to nearby buildings, offering an affordable option involving fewer materials. Instead of using leg structures, this type of walkway instead employs wall-mounted brackets. No ground needs to be disturbed and sites can turn previously unused areas into sheltered access paths for staff and visitors.
