Morgan Sindall Completes Work On New Multi-Storey Car Park

Construction News Image
Morgan Sindall Construction has completed works on a new multi-storey car park at Queen's Hospital Burton.

The main contractor delivered the project for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) NHS Foundation Trust, which commissioned the car park following the allocation of £3 million of Government funding. The development is part of the Trust’s wider strategy to transform and upgrade the main site and improve the experience for those using the hospital’s car parking facilities.

Set over four-storeys, the car park is built on land behind the treatment centre on the hospital's main site. It provides an additional 499 spaces, with 10 spaces with designated electric charging points. The site will be primarily used for staff, which will help free up space in the patient and visitors car park.

Morgan Sindall Construction has worked closely with the Trust to help them achieve sustainability targets on the project, which are based around the government's drive towards reducing greenhouse emissions in line with achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The main contractor used ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in the concrete foundations; a by-product of steel production, it requires less energy to produce and will reduce the embodied carbon of the development by up to 100 tonnes of CO2.

The car park has been designed by Gilling Dod Architects. Consultants on the scheme include Couch Consulting Engineers and Couch Perry Wilkes.

Richard Fielding, area director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: "Building a new multi-storey car park in a tight footprint, on a live hospital site, in just over a year, was challenging – but one we are extremely proud to deliver.

"Thanks to working collaboratively with the Trust, we ensured there was minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of the hospital during the build process which was crucial for the staff and patients. We also wanted to make sure we were able to give something back, so we were able to support some fantastic local causes such as St Mary’s Hospice in Birmingham and the Star Foundation. We were also fortunate enough to engage with local schools and nurseries for site visits – all of which has been a huge success."
