Mill Common was opened to the public at the beginning of June. This formed the final road construction part of the upgrade and ends over five and half years of major infrastructure work to boost the local economy and help connect rural communities.
Skanska played a leading role in the A14 Integrated Delivery Team (IDT), a joint venture bringing together Skanska, Costain and Balfour Beatty with National Highways. The delivery team worked closely together to deliver and coordinate the activities of 14,000 people, involved in this complex project through the supply chain. The majority of the upgrade was completed in May 2020, eight months ahead of schedule.

Through our integrated way of working, involving each of the project partners, our customer National Highways and supply chain we opened the main 21-mile A14 upgrade eight months early – setting new standards around collaboration and innovation along the way. We're delighted to have finished the final works in Huntingdon and to leave a positive legacy for the local community and motorists using this vital transport link."
The completion of Mill Common means almost a mile of new link roads have been built on the outskirts of Huntingdon helping to improve access to the market town and the new transport hub around the train station.
Developments at the station include a new car park for train users, better access for buses and other vehicles, improved footpaths, and significant tree planting.
This followed the dismantling of the old A14 Huntingdon viaduct which spanned the East Coast Main Line and brought increased noise and air pollution to the heart of Huntingdon. The 12,000-tonne structure had been out of use since the new bypass on the A14 linking Cambridge and Huntingdon was opened in December 2019.
