Plans have been submitted to develop a new Teesworks park and ride scheme.
The 35-acre site, located adjacent to the former SSI site’s Steel House, will have parking for over 1,500 vehicles.
The car park will be used by workers as development ramps up on the site's major projects, with Net Zero Teesside Power creating up to 5,500 jobs during its construction and SeAH Wind's offshore wind monopile facility supporting 1,500 more during its build and in the supply chain.
Teesworks will become one of the biggest construction sites in the UK, with this vital new infrastructure put in place to manage the thousands of workers needed to drive forward this transformational work. The new scheme will operate shuttlebuses from the car park to the projects, keeping congestion to a minimum on-site and the wider road network, while ensuring the workers are safe.
The plans will be considered by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and, if approved, construction is due to begin in early 2023.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "The massive schemes taking place at Teesworks in the cleaner, safer and healthier industries of the future will create hundreds of good-quality, well-paid jobs when operational but crucially thousands more in our construction sector right off the bat.
"Rome wasn't built in a day and nor will Teesworks be – the site's development is a long-term and vast project, and will be a hive of activity for years to come as we secure even more investors down the line.
"This new park-and-ride will support our huge ambitions and make sure people can quickly, easily and safely get to their jobs as we redevelop the area over the coming years and will become a valuable asset even after these schemes are complete. 2022 is our year of construction in more ways than one – and kick-starting this project is another way we’re supporting the sector to help get the job done."
