Construction work has commenced on latest phase of Cycleway 9 through Chiswick.
The works will take place on the section of C9 between the junction of Chiswick Lane and up to the turning for Heathfield Terrace.
The scheme is a partnership between Transport for London (TfL), Hounslow Council and Hounslow Highways. It is a temporary, experimental scheme designed to make it easier for residents to cycle for work and leisure.
The Hounslow scheme was first introduced in December 2020, as an emergency response to the pandemic. The changes included providing a fully protected cycle lane.
In July 2021, a decision was made by Hounslow Council’s Cabinet to make a series of improvements to the scheme and to retain it as part of the ongoing experimental scheme.
Improvements will include:
• New entry treatments and raised crossings at the junctions with Cranbrook Road, Brackley Road, Devonshire Road, Linden Gardens and Duke’s Road.
• New eastbound and westbound bus shelters at Cranbrook Road, Mayfield Avenue and Linden Gardens.
• Left turn exit only for motorised vehicles at Duke’s Road Junction.
• New parking spaces near Duke’s Road Junction.
• A new advanced stop line for cyclists will be installed at the junction with Acton Lane.
• Junction resurfacing and installing a yellow box junction at the Chiswick High Road junction with Turnham Green Terrace and Annandale Road and at the junction with Duke Avenue.
• New zebra crossing on Chiswick High Road junction with a one-way exit at Linden Gardens.
• Resurfacing of the westbound carriageway of Chiswick High Road at Heathfield Terrace.
Work will continue up to 2 December and then reconvene after the Christmas and New Year Holidays on 3 January. Phase 3b is planned to be completed by 31 January, 2023.
Access to residential areas adjoining Chiswick High Road and to local shops will be maintained at all times. Diversion signs will be clearly signed informing of alternative routes where applicable.
The work will take place between 7.30am and 4pm from Monday to Saturday. Residents and businesses in the area have been informed directly. They will receive further advanced notice of any night working which will be required to resurface the carriageway on Chiswick High Road in January.
Hounslow Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport Strategy, Councillor Kathrine Dunne, said: "These latest improvement works are based on feedback from the local community.
"The cycle lanes have been introduced to give residents a healthier alternative to the car. It will help to reduce congestion and improve air quality in our borough."
