Construction GRAHAM scooped a trio of awards at the annual Green Apple Environmental Awards presented at the Houses of Parliament.

The Green Apple Environment Awards were established in 1994 by the Green Organisation as an annual campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The trio of awards picked up this year mean that GRAHAM have now been recognised at this prestigious event an impressive 20 times.

In recognition of our continuing commitment to sustainable construction and 'delivering lasting impact', two projects picked up silver Awards for Environmental Best Practice (RVH Maternity Unit & A47 Longthorpe Footbridge) with a third (PRU) being named a commended winner.

As part of National Highways Construction Works Framework GRAHAM were appointed to undertake the replacement of the A47 Longthorpe Footbridge in Peterborough. Not feasible to connect to the grid and driven by the desire to advance GRAHAM’s net zero carbon by 2030 ambitions, the site team sought to identify a more sustainable , environmentally sympathetic and cost-effective solution to off grid power for their site.

The use of a solar hybrid solartainer solution for off grid power supply at the A47 Longthorpe footbridge replacement project has achieved significant carbon and cost savings as compared with a standard diesel generator. Savings of 85% in terms of carbon emissions and 61% in terms of cost have been realised despite a significantly higher rental cost incurred with the solartainer.

GRAHAM BAM Healthcare Partnership were commissined to deliver the new Maternity Hospital which represents the future of maternity care for Belfast. The new hospital will support a modern service which will give women more choice about their care and the birth of their baby.

Built on a brownfield site adjacent to the existing Maternity Hospital, it has been designed with sustainability in mind. Key achievements which contributed to the recognition for these awards include:

• Resource efficiency

• Pollution prevention

• Community Involvement & Engagement

• Biodiversity protection & enhancement

In a new category for this year The Pavillion School Project (PRU) , was recognised as a 'commended' winner. GRAHAM commenced work on delivering a new school facility for the London Borough of Barnet in January 2021. A considerable amount of hard work went into developing the design and construction methodology for this sustainable landmark project. The main school building and sports pavilion will transform the educational experience of the young people with minimum environmental impact.
