Wates Construction and Landsec have teamed up with Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) to launch 'Change the Script', a technical training programme aimed at individuals not currently in employment, education or training (NEET) or who have experienced homelessness.
The first programme of its kind, Change the Script includes three weeks of free, interactive pre-employment training where candidates will attain a CSCS card and other recognised accreditations. This will be followed by four weeks of practical, paid placements across several of Ambassador Theatre Group’s world-class theatre settings and one of London’s most iconic and prominent construction sites the Lucent project at Piccadilly Circus.
The seven-week programme will run from 9 January and include construction, building management and technical trade-related work experience opportunities in areas comprising off-stage, building management and backstage theatre roles in addition to drylining, mechanical, electrical and plumbing construction trades.
Long-term partners in developing high-quality mixed-use sites across London, Wates and Landsec have a shared commitment to provide a boost to unemployed adults in Westminster as part of their presence in the local area at project Lucent. Their unique partnership with Ambassador Theatre Group was born from this shared local commitment and a common drive to address similar sector skills gaps in both the construction and theatre industries.
The CITB is currently forecasting an additional 217,000 new construction workers will be required by 2025 to meet industry demand. Similarly, the theatre industry is continuing to experience shockwaves from the much-publicised closure of theatreland and other visitor attractions during the coronavirus pandemic.
Cat Holland, Community Investment Manager for Wates Construction London, said: "Lucent is a fascinating and complex site in the heart of the West End and it’s a privilege to be able to welcome people behind the hoardings to experience this exciting industry for themselves. The construction sector is facing a huge skills gap over the next few years and Wates is committed to showcasing the huge range of careers on offer across our business, including providing opportunities for training and sustainable work, so that we can leave a lasting legacy in the areas where we operate.
"I really hope 'Change the Script' helps participants who have faced multiple barriers to employment to take positive steps towards a new job and all of the benefits that employment brings."
