Contractor P.P. O'Connor has been chosen to start work on the phased demolition of a power station in Warrington.
Situated on the northern bank of the River Mersey, Fiddler's Ferry has stood as a prominent landmark for fifty years. Peel NRE has a vision to revitalise the site, enabling it to once again serve a productive purpose and make valuable contributions to the local economy. This includes the creation of employment opportunities and the development of new homes in the area.
In September 2022, Peel NRE submitted a prior approval notice to Warrington Borough Council, outlining their plan for the demolition of the Fiddler's Ferry site. Following the submission, which included a comprehensive Demolition Statement and a safety plan for the local area, the request has now been approved.
Prior to the demolition of the cooling towers, the team will undertake extensive preparations to ensure the highest standards of safety are maintained. Throughout the process, residents will be regularly updated and informed.
The initial phase of demolition will involve the gradual removal of the coal stock yard, four northern cooling towers, and some of the former administrative buildings situated in the northern part of the site.
It is expected that the cooling towers will be demolished by the end of January 2024.
Kieran Tames, Development Director at Peel NRE commented: "This announcement is one of the most exciting of this project so far and marks another major milestone in the redevelopment of Fiddler’s Ferry.
"It's reassuring to be working with industry experts, P.P. O’Connor as we demolish one of the countries last remaining coal-fired power stations.
"We know that the demolition has been anticipated by communities, not just in Warrington but across the region so will ensure that residents will be kept updated on our demolition plans as we develop a precise timetable."
P.P. O'Connor Managing Director, Peter O’Connor said: "Fiddler's Ferry is a highly prestigious location, and we are very proud to be involved in this project. We look forward to working with Peel NRE to achieve its vision in the regeneration of this strategic site."
