Cricklewood Boxing Club together with Brent Council and the Powerday Foundation has opened a new world-class facility in North West London.
At an event to celebrate the opening, attended by Brent Council Deputy Mayor Councillor Tariq Dar and Powerday Chairman Michael Crossan Hon BEM, the boxing club revealed that a £100,000 investment enabled it to relocate to the larger and improved facilities. In addition, the funding has also enabled it to convert spaces, provide male and female changing areas for the first time and purchase new, high-quality gym equipment to facilitate additional coaching sessions.
Founded over 10 years ago, Cricklewood Boxing Club prides itself on having a positive impact on the lives of young people in the community, particularly those at risk of getting involved in crime. This new investment will enable it to accept more youngsters and continue delivering invaluable physical and mental wellbeing activities to people across Brent and Barnet.
The boxing club, which the Powerday Foundation helped to initially establish, will also expand its work with local schools and colleges – and provide an extra-curricular intervention programme for young people, particularly aimed at involving more females in the sport.
The event was attended by a number of local stakeholders, including Cricklewood Boxing Club Leader Robin Buick, as well as Tara Crossan of the Powerday Foundation and Foundation Ambassador Sasha Hickey (England International Boxer).
Robin Buick, Head Coach at the Cricklewood Boxing Club, said: "For over a decade, we have provided voluntary sport and social integration projects to benefit the lives and lifestyles of thousands of young people across Brent and Barnet. We are delighted that we can now further enhance our voluntary inspirational provision within our own premises without the restrictions of time, access or equipment for everyone involved in the club. Our aim is to also extend our reach to engage more females, highlighting the benefits that boxing can have on both physical and mental wellbeing.
"Our unbridled thanks must go to the Brent Council, Young Brent and Young Barnet, National Lottery and of course the Powerday Foundation who have all provided investment and commitment in helping us to shape the future for the young people in our community."
