VolkerFitzpatrick To Oversee Refurb Of A13 River Lea Crossing

Construction News Image
Road Management Services (RMS) has appointed VolkerFitzpatrick to oversee the renovation of the A13 River Lea Crossing.

The project is a vital part of Transport for London's (TfL) ongoing initiative to develop a safer and more dependable road network.

The £14 million project is a part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing living and travel conditions in and around London.

VolkerFitzpatrick is undertaking essential maintenance and upgrades at the A13 River Lea Crossing (RLC) in East London, a vital 6-lane bridge originally built in the 1930’s. Spanning 60 metres and featuring a two-pinned arch with 16 riveted steel ribs, the RLC is a key component of the A13, the second busiest route in and out of London, accommodating approximately 40 million vehicles annually. These strengthening works, both below and above the bridge deck, will enhance the bridge's long-term durability, reducing the need for disruptive emergency repairs and minimising impact on local communities.

Volker Fitzpatrick's started on site in August, with steelwork replacement and repainting beneath the bridge. These works will run concurrently with the above deck works which will include waterproofing, road resurfacing, and the installation of new bridge parapets to enhance safety for all users.

To minimise disruption to local communities and road users, traffic management measures will be put in place to protect both the workforce and road users. These measures will be carefully phased, ensuring that at least two lanes in both directions remain open at all times.

The project team is closely collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Canal and River Trust, the Environmental Agency, the Port of London Authority, and the Marine Management Organisation, to ensure the work is conducted with minimal environmental impact.
