Reopening Of St Mary's Lighthouse Postponed

Construction News Image
The reopening of St Mary's Lighthouse has been postponed to mid-October, rather than the initially planned mid-September, to allow for crucial reglazing of the lantern. Several curved glass panes need replacement, which requires specialised manufacturing.

The need for reglazing was identified during close-up restoration work at the top of the lighthouse. The decision was made to complete this work while the scaffolding remains in place, avoiding the need to re-erect it and close the causeway again, minimising disruption to local residents and wildlife.

Replacing the glazing will help preserve the lighthouse for future generations and ensure a safe, welcoming environment for visitors.

St Mary's Lighthouse and the island have been closed for significant renovations since July, with North Tyneside Council investing nearly £900,000 to restore the landmark. The renovations include painting the lighthouse and visitor centre, repairing stonework, fixing windows, and restoring buildings on the island.
