Newcastle Station Clocks Restored To Sync For The First Time In Years

Construction News Image
For the first time in years, all three iconic roofline clocks at Newcastle's busy railway station are perfectly in sync, following a meticulous restoration by specialist teams. Over the past three nights, experts worked on behalf of Network Rail and station operator LNER to repair the historic timepieces.

Heritage clockmakers Smiths of Derby replaced the ageing mechanisms, some of which were between 30 and 50 years old and had suffered water damage. Using a high-level platform, teams worked 16 metres above ground, removing the old clock hands and broken movements behind them. The new mechanisms, likened to repairing massive carriage clocks, were then bolted into place, with new hands secured over the glazed clock faces.

In addition, modern LED backlighting has been installed, ensuring the clocks remain clearly visible during the night.

The £21,000 restoration project was funded through a 60:40 partnership between Network Rail and a grant from the Railway Heritage Trust. The work was completed just after 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, with all three clocks going live at 4:45 a.m., now accurately telling the time for commuters across the city.

The investment ensures the clocks will remain precise for years to come, preserving a piece of Newcastle's railway heritage.
