Restoration efforts on the historic Menai Suspension Bridge are making substantial progress, with the first phase of works confirmed to be completed on schedule.
Following the successful replacement of all 168 hangers, officials announced that the bridge will fully reopen to traffic on Saturday, 2 November at 00:01, lifting the existing 7.5-tonne weight restriction in place since early repairs began.
The next phase of the restoration program, which includes a comprehensive repainting of the bridge, will begin after a four-month pause running from November 2024 through February 2025. This pause is designed to allow uninterrupted access across the bridge throughout the winter months, resuming work in March when weather conditions are expected to be more favorable for continued repairs.
Officials have highlighted several benefits of this phased approach:
• Improved Efficiency in Phase Two: Warmer weather conditions in spring are expected to facilitate a smoother, more efficient delivery of phase two works.
• Alternative Route for Winter Weather Events: With the bridge fully operational, it provides a secondary crossing option in the event that severe weather or incidents disrupt traffic on the nearby Britannia Bridge (A55), alleviating disruptions and allowing heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and other vulnerable vehicles to traverse the Menai Strait without restrictions.
• Boost for Local Economy: The bridge's reopening is expected to bolster local businesses, particularly over the Christmas period, by facilitating greater access for visitors and local shoppers.
• Extended Operations at Holyhead Port: With fewer traffic restrictions, Holyhead Port can expect to benefit from a steadier flow of transport, crucial during the holiday season.
• Supporting Local Events: The bridge's availability will allow the Anglesey Half Marathon, organised by 'Always Aim High,' to incorporate the historic crossing in its route, bringing an influx of participants and spectators to the area and creating additional business opportunities for the local community.
The bridge's restoration is part of a broader effort to preserve its historical significance ahead of its 200th anniversary in January 2026, a target that remains unaffected by the paused schedule.
