Two key public spaces in Withington, Copson Street and Rutherford Place, are set for significant upgrades following a strong public backing, with 72% of residents in favour of the proposed improvements.
The enhancements, led by Manchester City Council, are designed to create pedestrian-friendly areas with greenery, seating, and improved paving, aiming to foster a welcoming and accessible environment.
Work on the project will begin on Rutherford Place from Monday, 4 November, with an expected completion by late December. Following a break for the holiday season, work will continue in early January 2024, expanding to include both Copson Street and the area outside Withington Library. The full project is scheduled for completion by March 2025.
Key changes to Copson Street will include:
• Partial pedestrianisation between Wilmslow Road and Patten Street
• New tree planting, lighting, and seating installations
• Restrictions on vehicles, allowing only cyclists, loading and unloading, access, and Blue Badge holders
Rutherford Place will see:
• A one-way restriction on Davenport Avenue towards Wilmslow Road to reduce through traffic
• Introduction of a one-way southbound route along Wellington Road from its junction with Lausanne Road
• Closure of a section of Wellington Road outside Withington Library
• Conversion of Rippingham Road to one-way westbound
The square outside Withington Library will also be expanded, providing a more inviting public space to support this important community hub. The council's initiative underscores a commitment to enhancing local areas, prioritising pedestrians and improving green spaces.
