Huddersfield Station Restoration Marks One-Year Milestone
Nearly a year after work began, significant progress is being made at Huddersfield station as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).
This transformative project aims to modernise the key northern transport hub while preserving its rich heritage as a Grade I listed building.
One of the most intricate elements of the station's upgrade is the restoration of its iconic trainshed canopy, one of the few remaining 'Euston style' roofs on the operational railway. Over platforms one and four, restoration efforts are well underway, with scaffolding towers and an elevated, soundproofed working platform installed to minimise disruption to train services and nearby residents.
Restoration work so far includes grit blasting to remove rust and old paint, steelwork repairs, and repainting at the Manchester end of the roof. The roof coverings have been removed in this area, and detailed cleaning using needle-gunning is ongoing. On the Leeds end, grit blasting has concluded, and structural steel repairs and strengthening are underway. Additionally, a new lantern structure will be installed along the roof, replicating the original design removed in the past.
A separate, meticulously executed project involves the relocation of the Grade II listed tearoom on the station’s island platform. Built in 1886, the timber match-boarded structure was dismantled into 8,000 individual pieces for safe storage. It will be reassembled and rotated 180 degrees as part of the station's redesign, improving its accessibility and prominence.
The upgrades are carefully balancing modern needs with historical preservation, ensuring Huddersfield station remains both a functional and culturally significant landmark for future generations.
