Construction on the first of Millom's four Town Deal projects is set to begin in early January, with enabling works for the all-weather pitch scheduled to start on Monday, January 6. The refurbishment is expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete.
Cumberland Council has appointed Thomas Armstrong to lead the project, which is part of the Town Deal's 'Activating Community Health' initiative. The scheme will transform the existing all-weather pitch into a modern activity and leisure facility designed to enhance community health and well-being.
The all-weather pitch refurbishment is one of four key projects under the Millom Town Deal, which secured £20.6 million in funding from the UK Government's Towns Fund, supplemented by an additional £8.7 million in match funding.
David Savage, Chair of the Millom Town Deal Board, said: "As 2024 comes to a close, we can now look forward in 2025, the long awaited first spade in the ground, which is a significant milestone in transforming plans into real action.
"We have listened to the community feedback and by working in collaboration with our delivery partners we have accelerated this work package so we can bring the 3G pitch back into operational use."
The work on the Leisure Complex will proceed once the planning application has been approved. The Millom Town Deal Board and Cumberland Council remain committed to delivering the Town Deal projects for the benefit of the Millom and Haverigg communities.
