SDS: Acoustic Enclosures

The performance of acoustic enclosures can often be substantially increased either by using SDS laminated damped steel panels in the construction or by adding retro-fit dampers to standard enclosure panels.

The increased attenuation can be particularly dramatic where machine vibration is fed into the enclosure. In this example, the enclosure round an offshore hydraulic power pack was constructed using damped sheet panels to reduce the power pack vibration radiated as sound. This reduced the estimated noise levels from the enclosure by an additional 75% – 90%.

If an existing enclosure is not performing well enough, it is often practical to increase the attenuation by 3dB – 5dB by simply adding retro-fit damper panels.
