Plans for the new South Holland Health and Wellbeing Hub have been approved, bringing the transformational redevelopment of the Castle Sports Complex site in Spalding one step closer.
Work is set to begin on the first phase of development in Spring 2025, with completion scheduled for Autumn 2026.
The £20 million project, which is backed by UK Government funding and additional investment from South Holland District Council, aims to improve health and wellbeing by providing enhanced sports, recreation, and leisure facilities, as well as new health and wellbeing services for the local community.
The first phase of development will focus on creating a single building that houses two new swimming pools, village changing facilities, a multi-sport hall, a fitness suite, cycle and group exercise studios, health and wellbeing consultation rooms, a children’s adventure play area, and updated reception and servery areas.
The broader site will feature a new outdoor 3G pitch, a park run circuit, a community garden, a running loop, additional cycling facilities, and improved car parking with electric vehicle charging points. There will also be remedial works to the existing bowls hall.
The final plans were developed following extensive consultations with residents in spring 2024, and the designs were further refined based on feedback from national bodies, statutory consultees, and local community groups to ensure they met the needs and desires of the local population.
A 2021 Sport England study revealed that South Holland had the fourth-lowest rate of exercise and activity in the country. The new state-of-the-art facilities are designed to provide a wide range of activities to encourage residents to live active, healthy lives.
During construction, users of the current 'dry side' facilities at the Castle Complex will be able to access temporary fitness and group exercise spaces at the Spalding Campus of Boston College on Red Lion Street. The existing swimming pool and 'wet side' facilities will remain fully operational throughout the works.
