Wellington To Undergo Transformation With Major Public Space Revitalisation
Telford & Wrekin Council has unveiled plans for a nearly £800,000 redevelopment of Wellington, aiming to revitalise public spaces, attract visitors and boost local investment.
The project will transform Wellington's public areas, making them more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, including those with mobility or sensory needs. The redevelopment will enhance the town’s market environment and encourage greater footfall for local traders.
Backed by additional funding from the central government and Wellington Town Council, the initiative also includes significant infrastructure upgrades. These will support sustainable travel, improve footpaths, and enhance parking options to create a more welcoming and functional town centre.
A cornerstone of the plan is a major overhaul of Church Street, which will be widened for pedestrians and equipped with new kerbs, drainage, and resurfaced roads. The final phase will see the addition of street furniture, such as benches and planters, making the area safer and more pedestrian-friendly while still accommodating vehicles and parking. The upgrades will align with the improvements made to Market Street, completed in March 2023.
The first phase of work, spanning Station Road to Queen Street, began on January 6 and is set to run until late February. The second phase, covering Queen Street to Vineyard Road, will follow from March to May 2025.
In addition to these upgrades, Wellington is set to welcome several transformative projects. The former YMCA building at 1 Walker Street will be converted into a mixed-use development featuring ground-floor retail space and nine modern apartments under the Nuplace rental scheme. Meanwhile, the Wellington Orbit cinema will undergo a significant refurbishment, creating a vibrant cultural hub in the town centre.
These initiatives form part of the wider Investing in Telford and Wrekin programme, which is driving significant change across the borough, including the Station Quarter in Telford Town Centre and Oakengates.
