Network Rail Completes Replacement Of 150-Year-Old Bridge In Hackney
Network Rail has completed the replacement of a 150-year-old bridge carrying Downs Park Road and Bodney Road over the railway in Hackney, ensuring the safety of both passengers and road users.
The old bridge, which was in poor condition, was replaced to prevent potential short-notice disruptions. Downs Park Road reopened to traffic just before Christmas, while Bodney Road reopened for pedestrians and cyclists on Friday, 24 January.
The project required significant work during the summer, including a 16-day closure of the railway to allow engineers to demolish the old bridge and begin construction of the new one. This affected services on the London Overground’s Weaver line, Greater Anglia, and the Stansted Express.
Since the railway reopened, the following complex tasks were completed to finalise the project:
• Pouring, curing, and waterproofing the new concrete bridge deck.
• Reinstalling utility connections, including electric, water, and telecom services.
• Resurfacing the road, reapplying road markings, and restoring the pavement.
Network Rail partnered with contractor Murphy to deliver the project.
