BCP Council Completes Major Coastal Protection Works At Hamworthy Park
BCP Council has completed significant coastal protection works at Hamworthy Park, ensuring its resilience against erosion for the next 20 years.
A 200-metre stretch of sea wall along the eastern promenade has been reinforced using low-carbon concrete, while new steps have been constructed to improve shoreline access. The project also involved essential repairs to the park's two jetties and the installation of buttresses to strengthen the existing wall.
The £550,000 project was made possible through a £318,000 investment from the central government’s Levelling Up Fund, supplemented by £233,000 from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) support funding.
This initiative marks the first of multiple coastal protection schemes set to be delivered across the BCP seafront, supported by a £19.9 million government grant aimed at safeguarding the region's coastline for future generations.
Cllr Andy Hadley, Cabinet member for Climate Response, Environment & Energy said: "I'd like to thank everyone involved in the successful completion of these works. Hamworthy Park is a thriving community greenspace with a wonderful harbourside setting, and these repairs were essential to protect the prom from coastal erosion - securing residents' and visitors' access to this open space.
"Our ambitious Levelling Up Fund Scheme financed by nearly £20m of government grants, is set to bring rejuvenation across the entire BCP coastline, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the benefit to both our residents and visitors as further projects are completed."
