19th Century Landmark In Chorlton Fully Restored

A Grade II Listed landmark in Chorlton has been fully restored, more than 130 years after its original construction.

The Lych Gate, which dates back to the 19th century, was officially reopened in a ceremony attended by local council members and community leaders. The historic structure, originally gifted to Chorlton by politician and barrister Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, 1st Baronet, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, has undergone extensive restoration to preserve its heritage.

The renovation included a full timber restoration of its iconic octagonal, black-and-white, half-timbered bell tower, complete with a tiled spirelet. The triangular roofs have been fitted with new chutes to prevent further water damage, while the brickwork has been cleaned, and repairs have been carried out on the pathways and infill panels.

Councillor Garry Bridges, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "I am thrilled to see the restoration of Lych Gate complete following the hard work by our teams. "The landmark has a rich history in Chorlton. It is an iconic part of the local community, with connections to the former church and the reign of Queen Victoria. It's restoration means it continues to stand proud in the area for more years to come."
