Bristol Council To Decide On Major A4 Portway Transport Upgrade
Plans to improve public transport and enhance walking and cycling routes along the A4 Portway will be presented to the Transport and Connectivity Committee next month.
On Thursday, 6 February, Bristol City Council will vote on whether to submit a full business case for the A4 Portway transport corridor project to the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority. If approved, this will be a crucial step in securing the multi-million-pound investment required to bring the scheme to life.
The proposed upgrades aim to reduce congestion, enhance bus reliability, and encourage sustainable travel. Key measures include:
• New 24-hour bus lanes to boost public transport use
• Wider pavements for pedestrians and cyclists
• Reduced speed limits and improved junctions for safer travel
• More green spaces and additional tree planting where possible
The A4 Portway project is part of the strategic corridors programme, which seeks to improve transport links across the region, drive economic growth, and reduce air pollution by promoting sustainable travel options. If funding is secured, the project will play a key role in making Bristol’s transport network more efficient and environmentally friendly.
