Balfour Beatty VINCI has reached a significant milestone in the construction of a new green bridge near Kenilworth, Warwickshire, which will form part of the HS2 high-speed railway.
The 33-metre-long, 42-metre-wide bridge, designed to provide safe passage for wildlife across the railway line, has now had its main deck poured and 32 parapets installed.
"We’ve recently completed a huge single-span deck pour on the Stoneleigh Road bridge and are finishing installing 32 parapets, each weighing nine tonnes," said George Shopland, Project Manager at Balfour Beatty VINCI. "This is another significant achievement for the Balfour Beatty VINCI team."
The next phase of construction will involve realigning Stoneleigh Road over the top of the bridge and creating two green corridors on either side of the carriageway, providing safe passage for wildlife.
"What makes Stoneleigh Road bridge special is the addition of valuable green space either side, meaning wildlife can safely pass over the high-speed railway line," said Vicki Lee, Senior Project Manager for HS2 Ltd. "Wherever possible, it’s important we integrate green measures and multifunctional design features, creating a railway that blends into the character of the surrounding landscape."
The Stoneleigh Road bridge is one of 16 green bridges being constructed along the HS2 route between London and the West Midlands.
Balfour Beatty VINCI is responsible for constructing 90 kilometres of the HS2 line between Long Itchington in Warwickshire and the centre of Birmingham.
