Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed Pave Aways Ltd to lead the refurbishment of Wellington Market.
The contractor was selected following a thorough tender process and brings extensive experience in working with historic buildings.
Renowned architectural firm Group Ginger Architects, known for their success in market revitalisations, will collaborate with Pave Aways on the project. Together, they will ensure that the renovation process accommodates the needs of traders, working closely with them on the project’s phasing and minimising disruption to ensure the market continues to operate as smoothly as possible.
The project is backed by funding from both Telford & Wrekin Council and central government and is set to breathe new life into the market, making it a vibrant hub at the heart of Wellington's leisure, retail, and entertainment scene.
The refurbishment aims to preserve the market's historic charm while updating its facilities to better serve the community. It will enhance the market’s role as a focal point for retail, food, and leisure, and will introduce an arts and entertainment programme that builds on the success of the popular late-night markets. The upgrades will provide quality spaces for both existing and new small independent businesses, boosting the local economy by attracting more visitors to the town.
In addition to improving the market's layout, the works will also focus on enhancing accessibility and flow throughout the building, all while preserving its historic features.
This project is part of a wider £12 million investment secured by the Council from central government, which will also fund the restoration of 1 Walker Street to create new retail spaces and apartments, as well as the refurbishment of Wellington Orbit cinema, further enhancing these key community and cultural assets.
