EDF has entered a new partnership with Constantine Energy Storage, agreeing to provide route-to-market and optimisation services for two new build battery assets, totalling 114MW.
The Capenhurst (Cheshire) and Legacy (North Wales) battery sites, each with a capacity of 57MW, will utilise EDF's Powershift platform to maximise revenue generation across Ancillary Services, Wholesale Energy Trading, and the Balancing Mechanism.
This collaboration marks the first time EDF, Britain’s biggest optimiser of batteries, has partnered with Constantine Energy Storage and represents a shared commitment to advancing the UK’s clean energy infrastructure. Constantine Energy Storage, founded in 2021 by Constantine Group, was established to manage the construction and ownership of a portfolio of battery energy storage systems. These two battery assets are part of Constantine’s wider development portfolio, positioning the company as a key player in the UK's energy storage sector.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can be operated efficiently on the Balancing Mechanism, making it easier and more cost-effective for the National Electricity System Operator (NESO) to balance the energy on the grid. This ultimately leads to savings for domestic users, enhancing the overall economic viability of renewable energy solutions.
The Capenhurst and Legacy battery storage systems are designed with an extended duration of 2.7 hours, compared to the typical 1–2-hour systems, offering enhanced flexibility to the UK’s electricity grid. Once operational, these assets will provide essential grid support and enable Constantine Energy Storage to maximise their value through EDF’s long-term optimisation strategy.
Stuart Fenner, Director of Wholesale Market Service Commercial, at EDF said: "We are delighted to be working with Constantine Energy Storage on these innovative battery projects. As first-time partners, we are excited to combine our market-leading optimisation expertise with Constantine’s forward-thinking approach to energy storage. The extended duration of these assets will provide crucial flexibility to the grid, and our Powershift platform will ensure they generate maximum value in all market conditions."
