Cumberland Council has provided an update on the ongoing road improvements on the A5086 in Cockermouth, a key project aimed at enhancing the local road network to ensure safer and smoother travel for both residents and businesses.
The improvements on the A5086 will involve road network repairs, the replacement of the drainage system, traffic sign upgrades, and the refreshing of road markings. To complete these essential upgrades efficiently and safely, the project will continue with the following updated phases:
Phase 2: Crown Street – Monday 3 March – Wednesday 12 March – Full road closure, including the Crown Street roundabout, with access to Main Street from Gallowbarrow/Sullart Street.
Phase 3: The Level – Thursday 13 March – Tuesday 25 March – Road closure with traffic lights in operation.
Phase 4: Main Street Roundabout – Wednesday 26 March – Thursday 27 March – Road closure at Gallowbarrow, with two-way traffic lights at the Main Street roundabout.
Throughout the work, full access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians, and dismounted cyclists.
Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal during the works, and updates about temporary bus stop relocations will be posted at affected stops. Passengers with questions about bus routes are advised to contact Stagecoach directly.
Cumberland Council acknowledges that the A5086 is a crucial route for the area and that some temporary inconvenience may occur during the project. The council is working closely with local stakeholders, including Parish Councils and local representatives, to minimise disruption as much as possible.
