Restoration Work Begins On Ramsgate's Madeira Walk Waterfall

Construction News Image
Work has commenced to restore the much-loved Madeira Walk Waterfall in Ramsgate, a landmark that has been out of action since 2022 due to leaks in its two large ponds. The necessary repairs will be carried out in two phases to bring the waterfall back to life.

During the initial phase, the ponds will be drained to assess the required repairs, with scaffolding and security fencing installed around the site. Given the waterfall’s rare Pulhamite structure, specialist landscape contractors experienced in historic landscape restoration have been appointed. In collaboration with horticultural experts, they will also cut back surrounding vegetation and remove invasive plant species.

Ahead of the restoration, ecologists surveyed the site for rare and protected wildlife, including bats, reptiles, and amphibians. Specialist environmental consultants conducted risk assessments and will continue to work alongside the project team to ensure minimal disruption to nesting birds and other species.

Once the initial work is complete, the second phase will focus on repairing the ponds to restore their water-holding capacity. The pumps and control system that power the waterfall will undergo a full overhaul, along with the restoration of feature lighting. The project is expected to be completed in time for the summer season.
