Construction On UK's Largest Commercial EV Charging Hub At Port Of Tilbury

Construction News Image
Fleete has commenced construction on what is set to be the UK's largest commercial vehicle electric charging hub, a shared facility located within the Port of Tilbury.

The project, scheduled for completion in December 2025, will play a key role in advancing clean energy solutions for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The development is the first project funded by the UK Government under the Thames Freeport seed capital programme, which aims to accelerate the Port of Tilbury’s transition toward net zero emissions. Fleete has secured £1 million in Freeport seed capital funding to develop a 5-megawatt (MW) charging station, featuring 16 rapid chargers capable of simultaneously serving 16 electric HGVs.

This strategically located 'clean fuel' hub will meet rising traffic demands from major developments within the Thames Freeport programme, supporting air quality improvements, sustainable transport growth, and economic development in the region.

As the largest of the Thames ports, the Port of Tilbury sees over 10,000 vehicle movements daily, with more than 60 companies operating commercial fleets at the site. However, infrastructure limitations, land availability, and grid capacity have posed challenges for heavy transport decarbonisation. Fleete’s EV Charging Hub aims to directly address these barriers by offering a reliable, high-capacity charging solution.

Key Features of the Port of Tilbury EV Charging Hub:

• 12 ultra-fast chargers (up to 360 kW), supplied by Heliox, designed for HGVs and commercial fleets.

• Four chargers using the Voltempo™ HyperCharging Megawatt Charging System, funded through the eFREIGHT 2030 project.

• Intelligent energy management systems to fairly distribute grid capacity among Port of Tilbury tenants.

• Enhanced accessibility for fleets operating in and passing through the Port of Tilbury area.
