Kier Completes New Victims' Centre For North Yorkshire Sexual Assault Services

Construction News Image
Kier has completed the refurbishment of Acer House Victims' Centre, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide essential services for victims of sexual assault in North Yorkshire.

The centre will house both the Adult Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and Child Sexual Assault Assessment Services (CSAAS), offering critical support in a safe and specialist environment.

Appointed in 2024 by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Kier was tasked with delivering a full internal fit-out of the facility. The £1.3 million project, procured through SCAPE, was carried out by Kier Places, a division of Kier Construction focused on building and workplace solutions across the UK.

A Safe and Supportive Space for Victims

The newly refurbished centre is designed to improve outcomes for survivors, both within and beyond the criminal justice system, ensuring they receive compassionate care, forensic medical services, and the necessary support for recovery.

Key features of Acer House Victims' Centre include:

• Two forensic medical examination suites with age-appropriate facilities.

• A non-forensic medical examination room for cases of historic child sexual abuse.

• Two video-recorded interview (VRI) suites for North Yorkshire Police to take statements.

• Four family waiting rooms for friends or relatives accompanying victims.

• An advanced air filtration system, meeting the Forensic Science Regulator’s guidelines to prevent DNA contamination and ensure forensic integrity.

The design prioritises victims' comfort and safety, with soft furnishings, toys, and private waiting areas to create a calm and supportive environment. To ensure a non-intimidating atmosphere, the centre does not feature formal police signage, making it feel distinct from a hospital or police station. Additionally, suspects will not be interviewed on-site, reinforcing its role as a safe space for victims.
