Manchester's historic Chorlton Library is set to welcome visitors once again following a year-long refurbishment that has restored its architectural heritage while upgrading its facilities for the future.
The Grade II-listed library, a landmark in the heart of Chorlton, has undergone a comprehensive transformation, unveiling long-hidden architectural details while ensuring the building remains a vital community resource for generations to come.
Originally opened in 1914, Chorlton Library was a gift from Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to the city of Manchester. The building was designed by City Architect Henry Price, who was also responsible for Didsbury Library.
As part of the restoration, the stunning dome in the library’s entrance and the mezzanine gallery, which had been concealed for decades, have been revealed once more, allowing natural light to flood the space below.
During the work, original tiles and historic lettering were uncovered, meticulously preserved and restored, offering visitors a glimpse into the library’s storied past.
The external stonework and windows have also been carefully repaired, while electrical and mechanical systems have been upgraded to improve energy efficiency. These updates will help the Manchester City Council meet its target of becoming zero-carbon by 2038.
Inside, reconfigured library areas and the removal of internal walls allow visitors to fully appreciate the original octagonal atrium, where historic features blend seamlessly with contemporary design.
Once the main library reopens, work will begin on the next phase of the project—enhancing the community and meeting spaces at the rear of the building. This additional section is expected to open later this year.
