Kier and Pembrokeshire County Council have marked the official start of construction on the Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange (HPTI) with a traditional ground-breaking ceremony, celebrating a major milestone for the town's regeneration.

The event, held on site, was attended by key council members including Council Leader Cllr Jon Harvey, Deputy Leader Cllr Paul Miller, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services Cllr Rhys Sinnett, and Haverfordwest Castle Ward Cllr Thomas Tudor. Together with Kier representatives, they celebrated the ceremonial breaking of the ground, signalling the commencement of the much-anticipated development.

The HPTI scheme will bring a state-of-the-art bus station and a new multi-storey car park to the heart of Haverfordwest. Designed by architects BDP and delivered by Kier, the project will feature over 300 parking spaces, seven bus bays, modern passenger facilities, public toilets, and accessible changing rooms for people with disabilities.

Sustainability is at the core of the development, with electric vehicle charging stations and rooftop solar panels set to supply the majority of the building’s energy needs. These features support Pembrokeshire County Council’s ambition to reach net zero carbon by 2030.

Built on the site of a former multi-storey car park and bus station, the HPTI forms part of the South West Wales Metro initiative, which aims to create better-integrated, sustainable transport options across the region. The scheme is being funded through the Welsh Government's Local Transport Fund.

Kier brings more than 60 years of experience working across south-west Wales to the project, having delivered a range of notable infrastructure projects including schools, hospitals, and the headquarters of Welsh broadcaster S4C in Carmarthen. The HPTI development was procured via the South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework (SWWRCF).
