A major £180,000 highways improvement scheme has begun in Stafford.
The project involves the reconstruction and resurfacing of the A5187 Station Road, including work on the approaches and exits of the Station Road/Railway Street and Victoria Road roundabout. Crews will also be repairing damaged ironworks, drainage systems and kerbs as part of the scheme.
Staffordshire County Council is delivering the improvements, which are expected to take around four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
To minimise disruption, the scheme has been carefully coordinated with other town centre works. Temporary lane and road closures, along with a number of overnight closures from 8pm to 6am for resurfacing, will be in place to ensure the work can be carried out safely. Signed diversions will guide traffic during closures, and access to homes and businesses in the affected areas will be maintained where possible. Overnight resurfacing work is scheduled for 6, 7 and 8 May.
James Bailey, Assistant Director for Highways and the Built County at Staffordshire County Council, said: "Good roads are essential for people and this is an important project at the gateway to the county town for people travelling by rail.
"It's good to see these long-awaited improvements get underway and I'm sure they’ll be welcomed by everyone who uses the road and the railway station.
"Crews will be doing their best to get the work done as quickly and safely as possible and to keep any disruption to a minimum. This includes doing the resurfacing work overnight when the road is quieter. The bulk of the work is also being carried out during the Easter holidays when traffic is lighter, which should also help to minimise any inconvenience.
"As ever, I'd like to thank people in advance for their patience while this important work takes place."
