A major redevelopment scheme, which will see each of Bristol’s 330 outdated prefabs demolished and replaced with modern, accessible places to live, has reached a major milestone with tenants beginning to move into the first complete new homes.
Six new bungalows are currently being built on the Walton Road site, replacing the four old prefabs that used to be there.
Working in partnership with Bovis Homes, most of the council’s old prefab homes have now been demolished and building work is well underway on the new replacement homes. By demolishing the prefabs on its 15 sites the council will be able to provide 330 homes for tenants, 190 of which are bungalows. By making best use of the land available, 746 new private homes will also be built.
The council took the decision to knock down the old, outdated prefabs when it became clear they did not meet the government’s Decent Homes Standard. Each of the new homes will be of a high quality and suitable for a range of tenants. The redevelopment scheme is due to be completed by 2012, with all new council units due for completion by 2011.
Councillor Judith Price, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The completion of this new bungalow is a major milestone in the prefab redevelopment project, which will have a positive impact for our council tenants and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to continued improvement of homes for our tenants.
“Bristol City Council is committed to providing high-quality homes for its tenants and this scheme replaces old, outdated homes with modern accessible housing suitable for a range of tenants.”
Graham Clift, Director of partnership Development at Bovis Homes, said: “We have made real progress on the prefab project with over 50% of the sites now having detailed planning permission.”
