TJI Joists Help Create Industrial Mezzanine In Record Time

TJI joists have been utilised to create a large industrial mezzanine floor in record time.

The 18m x 12.2m mezzanine floor has been installed to create additional production space at the Bristol specialist joinery operation of Fileturn South West, providers of high quality interior fit-outs.

The original mezzanine floor designs for the traditional brick-built 1960s building and offices called for sawn timber. However, architects for the project CMS Bath Ltd opted for TJI-joists because of their flexibility and ability to create long spans.

Not only did this prove to be more cost-effective than timber, it was also quicker to install - an important factor as the workshop remained in operation throughout the build.

The floor, supplied by TP Williams & Farmer based at Gloucester, comprised 302mm deep TJI 360 series joists supported by a steel frame and a TimberStrand LSL rim. The I-joists were covered with a P6 chipboard.

The mezzanine floor, which has increased the workshop floor space by almost a third, has a live floor area loading of 5kNm2 and a dead load of 0.75kN/m2.
