Work Set To Begin On Newport Regeneration Scheme
The first phase of infrastructure work that will mark the start of Newport’s £48 million Rodney Parade waterfront development gets underway this month.
The project, which will dramatically transform this area of Newport, combines the regeneration of the prominent waterfront site, the creation of a pedestrian promenade along the riverside and major improvements to the riverside defences of Newport.
The work will be undertaken by Taylor Wimpey UK and follows the approval of a compulsory purchase order by leuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, to enable development to proceed.
He described development plans for this important riverside location opposite the City centre as one of the most important steps in the regeneration of Newport.
He said: "This is a strategic site identified in the overall masterplan for the regeneration of Wales’ newest city. The new development will create an environmentally attractive and sustainable new quarter that is designed to maximise its riverside location while the river defence work will provide long-term protection for existing communities."
Taylor Wimpey UK was selected by the Welsh Assembly Government to redevelop this strategic seven-acre site on the eastern side of the River Usk between Clarence Place and the George Street Bridge.
The plans are to create a vibrant and sustainable new riverside community of 486 residential properties, including affordable homes, together with local shops and restaurants.
High quality design is an integral feature of the development and about a quarter of the site area will be earmarked to provide open spaces. The largest public square, providing a focal point for the development, will be at Clarence Place, fronting the derelict Art College. Newport City Council is working with the owner of the Grade II Listed Building to achieve its refurbishment and conversion to apartments.
