Ward End Library Reopens After Modernisation Scheme

Customers are enjoying the benefits of a major modernisation programme after Ward End Library reopened its doors on September 27 following a £170,500 revamp.

Led by John Hunt Associates, a Birmingham-based interior design practice, the renovation work has transformed the library into an exciting, attractive and interesting space.

The design process was informed by customer consultation and has focused on the entrance hall, children's library and the counter and has made the building a more welcoming venue for visitors.

The revamp is also enabling visitors to benefit from quicker computers, improved access to the building, a refurbished children’s section and better lighting which shows off the books to their best advantage.

Staff are also reaping rewards in the form of the creation of a single desk for adult and children’s borrowing – eradicating difficulties previously experienced when managing two counters.

Cllr Ansar Ali Khan, Hodge Hill Constituency Chair, said: "I am delighted that the work to improve Ward End Library is now complete.

"The library is a popular and well-used community resource that is now fit for the modern age.

"In particular, we are extremely grateful for the patience shown by users of the library during the renovation work – and I am sure they will be delighted by the end result when they next visit."

The Hodge Hill Constituency secured £90,000 capital funding for the project plus £3,000 from the local services Disability Discrimination Act budget to transform the venue into a building fit for a 21st century library service.

In addition, new computers have been funded with £11,500 from the Library IT budget and Sure Start has provided funding improvements worth £5,000 to the children’s library.

A further £9,000 was pledged from the city-wide Youth Capital Fund, with the remainder coming from Washwood Heath (£42,000) and Hodge Hill (£10,000) in the form of Neighbourhood Renewal Fund cash.
