Carillion Wins £137m In Contracts
Support services and construction company Carillion has won three new contracts throughout the UK worth £137 million, including £47 million for the Scottish Prison Service.
The international firm also secured a £70 million contract for the new Rolls Royce Building in London, and a contract to provide new offices for the Welsh Assembly Government in Aberystwyth with a target cost of approximately £20 million.
Carillion recently hit the headlines over its persistent approaches and takeover bids for one of its rivals, Alfred McAlpine. Recent news of a defection to the Carillion cause by a major McAlpine stakeholder, and its new bounty of contracts will increase speculation that McAlpine's continuing resistance closer resembles its death throws than a sustainable autonomous future.
The contracts for the Scottish Prison Service involve the design and construction of a new 135-prisoner place house block at HMP Edinburgh and a new gate complex, kitchen, energy centre, prisoner reception, games hall and health centre for HM Young Offenders Institution at Falkirk.
Carillion Chief Executive, John McDonough, said: "The contracts for HM Prison Edinburgh and HM Young Offenders Institution were awarded under our long-term framework contract with the Scottish Prison Service and we look forward to working closely with the SPS to deliver these new projects, which form part of its ongoing programme to improve prisons in Scotland."
The new eleven storey Rolls Building in Fetter Lane will provide new office accommodation to replace the existing Rolls House, which was once the offices and printing house for the Daily Mirror.
The project is due for completion in October 2009.
Carillion is a major support services, construction and Public Private Partnership project company. The Group has annual revenue of around £4bn, and operates across the UK, the Middle East, Canada and the Caribbean.
