Holyrood Repairs Cost £1m

Maintenance to the Scottish executive building is costing taxpayers over a million pounds per year.

Since the building opened in 2004, £2.2 million has been spent on repairs. The cost excludes the repairs to the debating chambers roof, which cost almost half a million.

One Scottish MP has already described the cost as "excessive" for a building that has been seeped in controversy over cost from its opening.

Despite winning many architectural and heritage awards, the £431 million building has had its share of problems. The highly lauded debating chamber roof saw a laminated wooden beam swing loose from one of its mounts in March to be left dangling above Tory benches.

A parliament spokesman said: "Holyrood is open to the public seven days a week, 361 days a year and is an award-winning building of individual and iconic design. There are maintenance requirements associated with running a landmark building that has welcomed more than one million visitors."
