Boeing Confirms Production Delays To 'Most Environmentally Friendly Jet'

Boeings has been forced to delay deliveries of the new 787 Dreamliner plane due to production problems.

The estimated three-month delay puts deliveries 12 months behind schedule to 2009 rather than late 2008 according to the US plane maker. The first test flight will not take place until the end of the second quarter.

Scott Carson Boeing Chief Executive said the firm had continued to be challenged by start-up issues in their factory and in their extended global supply-chain. He also declared the design and technologies behind the plane remain sound.

The Dreamliner is the fastest selling model to date and has been regarded as the most as the most environmentally-friendly commercial jet built to date.

"We are deeply disappointed by what this delay means for our customers, and we are committed to working closely with them as we assess the impact on our delivery schedules." Mr Carson added.

Boeing has already received 802 orders for the plane which it says is much more fuel-efficient than its competitors and produces 20% less carbon dioxide.

UK carriers British airways, First Choice and Virgin Atlantic have all placed orders.
