A new publication by the Scottish Building Federation (SBF) has outlined some of the key issues and possible solutions affecting the construction industry today.
The industry contributes over 10% of Scotland’s GDP and has a turnover of almost £12bn last year.
'Blueprint 2008 - Building Scotland's Future' puts forward a positive agenda, which includes appointing a dedicated construction minister and measures to develop a dedicated strategy for the construction sector. It is also designed to address the skills shortage, bring about an end to the planning delays that stifle growth and put Scotland at the forefront of green building techniques.
It is currently an interesting time going ahead for the sector as Scotland deals with the opportunities and challenges presented by the construction of a new Forth Road Bridge, the Government target of 35,000 new homes each year and preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.
Commenting before the launch, SBF Chief Executive Michael Levack, said: "We are delighted to be launching this document, which addresses the key concerns of our members. Construction, despite its enormous impact on the economy, has not had the status afforded other industries, making twice the contribution of agriculture and almost three times that of the combined utility services to the economy.
"We look forward to a closer working relationship with the Scottish Government and other key parties as we address the key challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead."
Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney, said: "Construction makes a huge contribution to the economy, supporting 8% of jobs in Scotland. I was pleased to participate at the launch of the Scottish Building Federation’s blueprint for the future of the industry. This Government is continuing a fruitful dialogue with the Scottish Building Federation."
