Waterwise Welcomes The Government’s New Vision

Waterwise today welcomed the Government's new water strategy for England and Wales which will help to combat the negative effects of climate change by reducing the water industry's carbon footprint.

"We welcome the moves announced today, which give a clear vision for the supply and use of water in a world where the economy, as well as the environment, is increasingly dominated by climate change," said Jacob Tompkins, Director of Waterwise

The new water strategy – Future Water - sets out a clear vision and a coherent policy framework. A new stringent water efficiency target and commitment to universal metering represent a significant step forward from government and Waterwise is in full support.

"Waterwise wholeheartedly welcomes the Government's vision for how we should all use water in the next two decades – for a world where green is no longer green but is rather the norm. We agree with the Government that we all need to attach more value to water and use it wisely rather than wasting it. In the last two years, we have seen the worst floods and droughts for a century – and both of these have led to water shortages. By not wasting water we can easily reduce our water consumption by around 30%," added Tompkins.

Waterwise is particularly pleased at the following government announcements:
  • A new goal of 120 litres per person per day by 2030: down from the current average of 150, and building on progress made so far in new homes, this will drive progress toward making all homes in England and Wales water efficient
  • Universal metering in water-stressed areas by 2030: this represents a significant step forward from government, which we very much welcome. The decades-old rateable value of a house is no longer a sustainable way to pay for water, and we look forward to further flesh on the bones of this move, and to a commitment to full metering across the country as soon as possible (supported by a tariff structure to protect vulnerable customers)
  • A new commitment with the water industry to reduce their carbon footprint projects from the water industry to fit free water-saving devices in homes will help contribute to a reduction in their carbon footprint, saving on the carbon costs of both pumping and treating, and the heating of water in the home.
It is in everyone's interest to reduce the water that is wasted at home and at work. The Government's new strategy will empower and inspire organisations to do this. However, we can all play our part in protecting this precious resource by making small behavioural changes and installing water efficient devices at home.
