Council Supports Proposed Expansion Of Heathrow Airport

Spelthorne Council has agreed to support, in principal, the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport, subject to consideration of a number of factors.

At a meeting of the Council, members debated the recent government consultation exercise to which Spelthorne has contributed.

The consultation asks specific questions on issues such as: proposed third runway; air quality; noise and use of runways

The Council discussed the ongoing viability of the airport and its contribution to the economic well-being of Spelthorne. Around 12% of the Borough's population works at Heathrow, either directly or in associated businesses.

The Borough has gained from the airport over many years in terms of improved transport links, quality housing and other commercial benefits with money being spent on shopping, eating and other activities throughout Spelthorne.

If Heathrow does not expand, it may well find itself falling further behind other airports that are already expanding fast to meet increased need. Frankfurt airport already has three runways, Paris Charles de Gaulle four and Amsterdam five. All three airports have surplus capacity whereas Heathrow's service is beginning to dwindle, in 1990 it served 227 destinations which have shrunk to 180 in less than 20 years.

Council Leader John Packman commented: "I think it would be a serious disservice to our residents to 'just say no' to Heathrow expansion.

"Of course we need to consider noise, pollution, potential transport issues as well as the impact of 'mixed mode' operation which, in effect , means that some residents would have take offs or landings, from one runway without let up. This could well adversely impact residents in Stanwell Moor and we are completely opposed to it.

"We are continuing to make sure our views are known to government and consideration is given to all relevant factors."
